I don’t usually finish books that I don’t like. That said, I finished The Whispers* and I am pretty sure I hated it. So… is it possible for a book be hated and also 100% unputdownable?
Here is what I hated:
every single character
most of the plot points
all the coincidences
Here is why I couldn’t put this book down:
I needed to know what really happened to Xavier
I needed to know who was sleeping with whom
I needed to keep wondering if people can really act that badly
I read a ton but it is unusual for me to read while cooking dinner and that is what I found myself doing yesterday. The night before, I stayed up later than usual reading and I had a nearly impossible time falling asleep because I could not stop thinking about what was going on in this book.
So was The Whispers a good book because I could not stop reading and thinking about it? Or was it an awful book because I hated the story and all the characters?! I came over here to write and try to figure this out but the more I think about it, the less I am sure?
Other books that fall in to this category for me include Ashley Audrain’s debut novel The Push, Lionel Shriver’s We Need to Talk About Kevin, Kate Elizabeth Russel’s My Dark Vanessa and Zoje Stage’s Baby Teeth- all books I read quite a long time ago that I still think about periodically.
I would love to hear from you if you have read The Whispers and also if there are other books you think I could add to this list that I am going to call ‘Unputdownable Books That I Hated.’ :)
xo,
Stacey

Ha! IMO yes but it was a fast read.
Taylor Adams. There were so many issues with this book. The problem was easily solved but the author ran off to extremes that were silly. It drove me nuts.
