Hi All!
As I listened to all the midyear ‘best of’ podcasts, the peer pressure got to me, so here goes!
This has been a funky reading year for me. I started working at the circulation desk of our local library in January and I am loving my time there. Being surrounded by books and readers all day is the absolute best but it is causing chaos in my reading life. I come home with stacks of books every day cause I can’t help it. This means that I am more distracted than ever by books that I think I might like more than the one I am currently reading. So… I have started and stopped more books than usual and I am finding it harder to sink into my current reads.
Despite all of this though, I have read some amazing books. While I chose the five above at this moment in time, know that if you asked me to do this same thing tomorrow, my picks might very well be different!
If you have been following me for a bit, you know that writing reviews and/or plot summaries is not my thing. I just fully believe that other people do it much better than I do so I leave it to them while I give a very simple description of why I loved a book.
Details-ish below :)
Severance- I am always on the lookout for a book that reminds me of Station Eleven because I loved that book (and the tv show!) so very much and Severance did it.
The Custom of the Country- I am not a classics reader but this title made me reconsider many books that I have often written off. Undine Spragg may be one of my all time favorite fictional characters even thought I sort of hate her.
Marty!- I won’t be surprised if Marty! is my favorite book of the year. I was talking with a colleague about this title this week and I was brought immediately back in to the genius of the world Akbar created. I don’t know what is more outstanding- the writing, the character development, the questions it makes readers consider…
Soldier Sailor- My first baby is turning twenty one tomorrow (!!!) but I can still bring up the emotions of early motherhood incredibly easily. I wouldn’t trade that time in for anything because it brought us our incredible daughters but it was not easy. If Soldier Sailor had existed then, it would have been a life line during those days.
The God of the Woods- There are some books that are overhyped. God of the Woods is not one of them. Well written mysteries are my absolute favorite type of book and I will be adding God of the Woods to the list I keep of these reads.
Happy Reading everyone and as always, please share what you have loved lately- my ‘to be read’ list can never be too big!
xo,
Stacey
Upcoming Events:
We are so excited to host our 2nd annual Check It Out: Great Summer Reads event. Last summer, Lorri, director of the Ridgewood Public Library, Roberta, assistant director and I sat down to talk about our recent favorite reads and we have been chatting about books once a quarter (well all the time really!) since then.
Check It Out is a low pressure way to come and find ideas for your own reading or for your book club. We keep the get together casual. As an audience member you are free to sit quietly and listen or to share you opinion of the books we recommend. Anything goes!
