A few weeks ago, I read this quote:
“We must risk delight. We must have the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of this world.”
-Jack Gilbert
I can’t remember where I read these words but they have stuck with me nonetheless. The world is a dumpster fire- or in prettier words, a ruthless furnace. If you turn on the news or click on to social media for even a minute, it is hard to deny this truth. That said, I will never be a person who stops watching the news or vows off of social media. For me, staying informed and connected is important and frankly makes me happy- until it doesn’t. :)
But… it turns out that an accidental media break can be an amazing thing. Yesterday, Caroline and I flew home from Florida. We had spent three days lying by the pool, reading, napping and eating yummy food. I was also on my phone but accidentally, I was not on news sites.
It turns out that while we were gone, lots of very unfriendly things happened in the so-called friendly skies. A man with a sharpened spoon (this could be a great book title!) attacked a flight attendant, turbulence was fatal and small planes collided in the air. And thanks to my accidental media break, I had no idea that any of this had happened.
So when our plane took off yesterday, I looked out the window, grateful for a few days away and excited to capture this image of delight. I flew home in blissful ignorance.
So here’s to risking delight every so often.
And as always, my favorite part of writing is the connection it brings… so any stories of delight or accidental media breaks? Come tell me about them!
